However, for disciplined fighters dedicated to putting in the reps, a grappling dummy can offer significant benefits.<blockquote>You need to know what to do and make sure you're drilling the proper techniques.</blockquote><h3>Role of A Good Coach</h3>This is where having a good coach comes in handy. A knowledgeable coach can guide you, ensuring you're drilling the right techniques the right way. Throughout my career, grappling dummies have played a crucial role in my training and success. I've clinched multiple submission victories, including three in the UFC, many thanks to the hours I spent drilling on a grappling dummy.<h3>Types of Grappling Dummies</h3>Submission Master Grappling DummyI've experimented with different types of grappling dummies over the years. One of my most-used ones is the Submission Master Grappling Dummy, particularly useful for practicing techniques while you're on the bottom.Techniques Practiced:Closed guard Kimuras Triangles Bump sweeps Bump sweep to guillotinesBubba Grappling DummyAnother grappling dummy I’ve used extensively is the Bubba Grappling Dummy. This dummy closely mimics human movement, especially in the upper body and legs.Techniques Practiced:Head and arm triangles Arm bars from side control Kimuras from side control North-south chokes<h3>Personal Experience and Success</h3>When I fought my second UFC fight against Volmeer Lazaro, I had just recovered from a year-long injury. During my downtime, I drilled countless reps on my grappling dummy. My ground game wasn't top-notch then, but consistent practice helped me improve.In-Action Example:In my fight with Lazaro, I used a bump sweep that I had drilled thousands of times on my dummy. This disrupted his balance enough for me to stand up and gain the upper hand. That moment solidified my belief in the effectiveness of grappling dummies. I dedicated so much time to drilling that specific move that it became second nature to me.<blockquote>I drilled that move about at least 3000 times on that dummy. So now I'm really good at that move because of that.</blockquote><h3>Training Techniques and Conditioning</h3>The dars choke I executed against Ablera Hilllo was another move honed with hours on a grappling dummy. Besides drilling techniques, I focused on grip conditioning by executing dars choke holds on the dummy, holding as tight as possible for about 30 seconds, and repeating the process. This built my arm endurance so I could sustain intense grappling without tiring quickly.<blockquote>What happens when you don't train your squeeze, your squeeze conditioning? It's your job to be in shape.<h3>The Role of Your Coach</h3>So, here's the deal. Your coach's primary job is to teach you how to fight. If you're coming to class, thinking you're ready to fight after a year of training, but you can't even do all the rounds at a fast pace, guess what? But that's not entirely accurate. Yes, training should be demanding and help build your conditioning, but you need to contribute too.1. Regular Trainees vs. Fighters:If you're a regular person doing two rounds and taking one off, that's fine. You're not trying to be a fighter. Fighters, on the other hand, need to be in the best shape possible. Taking rounds off shouldn’t even be an option. 2. Consistency:Some fighters do two rounds of grappling, sit one out, and then claim they need to improve their cardio. No, you need to stay on the mat and push through it. Consistent effort in training translates to better performance in fights. Strength and conditioning are essential, but they shouldn't replace actual fighting practice. 3. Training Intensity:Training needs to be intense. If you're not pushing yourself, you're not preparing for a real fight.<h3>The Myth of Strength and Conditioning</h3>Strength and conditioning have their place in training, but they alone won't make you fight-ready. Some fighters emphasize conditioning so much that they forget to train how they fight.Sean Strickland’s ExampleTake it from Sean Strickland, who spars every day. You need a balance of both.Drills and Practice 1. Class Structure:Train for two hours a day, four to five days a week. Split your time between technique drills and live practice. 2. Technique Under Fatigue:Practice your moves while you're tired. This mimics real fight conditions where you won't have the luxury of taking breaks. Stay on the mat and keep going, even when you're exhausted. Real Fight Scenarios If you're a fighter in a mixed class with regular students, you shouldn’t sit out any rounds. Bodyweight Exercises: Push-ups, pull-ups, and natural body lifts are great for building strength and endurance. Consistency in Sparring: Dedicate yourself to sparring consistently for extended periods. Push through ten 5-minute rounds straight to build your cardio. <h3>Success Recipe </h3>Your success as a fighter depends on a few key elements:1. Training Consistency: Regular, intense sessions are crucial. 2. Technical Proficiency: Ensure your coach has solid techniques to teach. 3. Self-Motivation: Push yourself to keep going, even when it's tough. 4. IT'S NOT YOUR MMA COACH'S JOB TO GET YOU IN SHAPE!

After traveling and moving into a new place, I'm excited to dive into a topic many of you have been asking about – my experience training Dutch kickboxing in Holland. If you enjoyed my video on training in Thailand, you'll find this one just as interesting.<h3>Settling In and Getting Started </h3>So, the year was 2014. I went to Holland and stayed for a full month to train kickboxing twice a day. It was an amazing experience. Fred Royers is well-respected in the Dutch kickboxing community, known for his championship titles in Savate and Dutch Kickboxing. Despite stepping back from coaching, his legacy carries on through the new coaches running the gym.Other Gyms I Trained At &nbsp;Mejiro Gym in Amsterdam: I visited this gym a few times. It’s a notable name in the kickboxing world. Unnamed Gym: Unfortunately, I can’t remember the name of one of the gyms I visited, but the experience was equally phenomenal.<h3>The Training Regimen</h3>Training was intense. I worked out six days a week, twice a day from Monday to Friday, and once on Saturdays. Here's a breakdown of what my weekly routine looked like:Sparring: Three days a week. Boxing: Two to three times a week. Partner Drills, Bag Drills, and Shadow Boxing: Regularly incorporated into the training sessions.Sparring InsightsSparring in Holland is no joke. The intensity and dedication to technique are unlike anything else. They know how to control the power, ensuring safety while maintaining a high level of intensity. Bigger guys would go lighter on the head but would not hold back on body shots and leg kicks.<blockquote>They would beat the shit out of your body, guys. Partner drills, bag drills, and shadow boxing ensured that every session was meticulously planned and executed.Key Takeaways from the Drills:Every combination ends with a low kick. No pulling punches or kicks; go 100% even during drills. Intense one-hour sessions felt like three hours of practice due to the rigorous pace.Boxing EmphasisA significant part of Dutch kickboxing is setting up kicks with hand combinations. We did boxing drills twice a week, sometimes even thrice. This structured approach ensured we learned to blend boxing and kickboxing seamlessly.<h3>The Brutality and the Reward</h3>Dutch kickboxing training is not for the faint-hearted. The sessions are brutal and target both physical and mental endurance. Adapt to the Intense Drills: Be prepared for intense and structured drills. Pick a Few Good Coaches: Find one or two promising coaches and stick with them for the duration of your training.<h3>Comparing Holland and Thailand</h3>One major difference between training in Holland and Thailand is the focus on partner drills versus pad and bag work. In Thailand, you get more pad sessions even in group classes, whereas, in Holland, pad work is mostly one-on-one. Dutch sessions also beat up your body more due to the harder sparring and intense partner drills.<h3>Final Thoughts and Recommendations</h3>Would I recommend training Dutch kickboxing in Holland? Absolutely! Whether you're an MMA fighter or a kickboxer, you'll gain invaluable experience. Just be prepared for the intensity and make sure to condition your body, especially your legs. Visiting multiple gyms but working with a few dedicated coaches will maximize your learning and retention.Training in Holland was a transformative experience and, despite the physical toll, I came back with amazing techniques and a renewed appreciation for hard sparring.Thank you for reading about my journey! I'm very blessed and thankful for how I was raised because it helped me turn out the way I did. You know what, man? You have to talk to me about that, because I think every guest I’ve brought on has always said, “man, the upbringing from the father's standpoint was always a little bit rougher, but in a way, do you feel like, man, we needed that?" That's something I feel like. Maybe not overly aggressive towards us, but, man, I needed a stern father, especially with me.<h3>The Blessings of a Firm Upbringing</h3>I didn't always appreciate how stern my father was. There were times when it felt too much. How do you feel? Like, do you, in ways, do you appreciate how stern he was, and what have you taken from that to put on yourself?Idolize, Demonize, and Humanize I definitely appreciate it now, for sure. When it was happening, of course not. And it’s funny because I saw this guy I follow a lot, Patrick Bet-David, talking about how as a child, you go through three different phases with your parents:1. Idolize: Growing up, they're your hero. 2. Demonize: At some point, they become like, "Oh, my dad's old. He doesn’t know what he's talking about." 3. Humanize: Later on, you realize, "Hey, they're just humans, just like you," and there's this humanization to it.<blockquote>You go through three phases with your parents: Idolize, Demonize, and Humanize.</blockquote>The Humanization and RespectAt some point, they become human, and you get more respect. You become more respectful of how you were raised, and you really enjoy what happened. You realize that it was important.Reflecting on Parental InfluenceThinking back, the strictness and sternness of my father’s ways embedded values in me that have shaped who I am today.1. Discipline: It's a crucial trait that he enforced, and though it felt challenging, it’s something I hold dear now. 2. Respect: Understanding the boundaries of respect and why it’s essential. 3. Resilience: The toughness and ability to withstand adversities come from that tough-love upbringing.Appreciating the Tough LessonsGrowing up, we don’t often understand the rigid rules. Kids don't generally appreciate the stern “no,” the high expectations, or the rigorous disciplines enforced by their parents, especially fathers. It’s only when we gain more life experience that we start to value those lessons.The Journey of UnderstandingWhat Patrick Bet-David articulated about idolizing, demonizing, and eventually humanizing our parents is incredibly accurate. It's a journey that brings more profound respect and appreciation.1. Idolizing Stage: We look up to them like they're superheroes. 2. Humanizing Stage: Ultimately, the humanization of parents makes you see them as individuals with their own struggles and experiences. Hey everyone! I got a request to talk about hygiene in martial arts and MMA—cleaning your equipment, the type of hygiene you need, and how to protect yourself and your teammates from skin infections. We'll touch on grappling, striking, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, and boxing. Let's dive in!<h3>Hygiene for Grappling</h3>Grappling, whether in jiu-jitsu, wrestling, or other forms, requires special attention to cleanliness. Here are some key points:Wash Your Gear Gis: If you roll in a gi, it’s essential to wash it after every session. Gis can harbor bacteria, sweat, and even traces of blood. Clothes: No-gi practitioners should ensure their training clothes are washed just as frequently. Nail CareKeep your fingernails and toenails short. Here's why:Injury Prevention: Short nails reduce the risk of scratching your teammates. Personal Experience: I've seen injuries where someone got scratched in the eye while rolling. It's upsetting and avoidable. Remember, keeping nails short is a sign of respect towards your teammates. No one wants to get sidelined by an avoidable injury.<h3>Hygiene for Striking</h3>Striking arts like boxing and kickboxing also demand strict hygiene practices. Here’s what you need to know:Clean Your Equipment Spray Your Gear: After every practice, spray your gloves and shin guards with Lysol. This helps to kill bacteria and prevents them from developing a smell. Regular Deep Cleaning: Once a month, drench your gear with Lysol and let it air dry for a night or two. Hand Wraps: Wash your hand wraps at least every couple of weeks. More often if you sweat a lot. Glove Maintenance Frequency of Replacement: Training 4-5 days a week means you'll need new gloves every six months to a year. Spray with Lysol: As mentioned, always spray them down after use. Different Gloves for Different Roles: Sparring Gloves: 16oz gloves are recommended for sparring. Drills and Bag Work: Use lighter gloves, like 10 or 12 oz, for partner drills and bag work. <h3>Personal Hygiene Tips </h3>Showers and Soap Post-Training Showers: Always shower after training, especially grappling. You're exchanging a lot of sweat and bacteria. Use Antibacterial Soap: This reduces the risk of infections such as staph and ringworm.<blockquote>If you train martial arts long enough, you’re probably going to get staph or ringworm or some kind of skin issue. It just comes with the territory, especially with grappling. </blockquote>Special Soap Option For those extra cautious or training in environments that are not as clean, a product called Hibiclens could be a game-changer. It’s a type of surgical soap that kills more germs, helping prevent staph, ringworm, and other infections.Regular Gear Maintenance Rotation of Gear: Switching between multiple sets of gloves and hand wraps ensures you always have a clean pair available.
