The Real Truth About Training Time in Martial Arts: Lessons from a Late Starter
Hey, guys! Today, I’m sharing something that took me a long time to be truly proud of as a martial artist. If you’ve been in the fight game, or even just followed it a bit, you already know that it’s full of crazy highs and lows. And I mean crazy. Let me be real—fighting can feel like a drug. There's nothing quite like the rush of a win, and nothing quite as rough as the sting of a loss. But after looking back at my career, stepping away from the cage, and actually thinking about the why, I realized there’s one thing I’m super proud of: I only ever lost to fighters who had more training time than me. That adds up to a lot more than just a stat in the record books. Let’s dig deep on what that really means.
Life at the Highest Highs—and the Lowest Lows
Let’s kick things off with the high points. Imagine standing in the middle of Madison Square Garden, soaking up the roar of the crowd as your hand gets raised. Or taking a win at the American Airlines Center where the Dallas Mavericks play, right here in my home town. Those moments are unforgettable. Everything you dream about as a fighter. But then, I’ve also been knocked out cold on national TV. There’s nothing quite like it. The lows cut deep. It’s the flip side of that rush—absolutely crushing.
“Fighting is like a drug. It’s the highest of highs and the lowest of lows.”
Let’s be real: Most people only see the highlight reels, but the lows are just as much a part of the journey.
My Journey: Starting Martial Arts as an Adult
Here’s the thing. When people see fighters on TV or signing with the UFC, they assume everyone started as a kid. But I stepped into the gym for the first time at 20 years old. Twenty. Not ten. Not eight. And I didn’t even start grappling until I was 22. When you start late, you’re always looking up at a mountain of experience in front of you. People who’ve been at it since childhood have thousands more hours of muscle memory, live reps, and pure mat time. My Timeline

20: Started boxing

22: Started no-gi jiu-jitsu and grappling

Multiple surgeries slowed me down

About 5 years from my first lesson to signing with the UFC

And that five years? That’s not a clean run either. Throw in surgeries and you lose months at a time. When I look back at my losses, almost every single one was against someone who started younger, often when they were little kids. They didn’t just have a few more fights—they had years more training. I faced world-class guys like Justin Gaethje and Paul Felder. Justin was a D1 wrestler. Paul had been doing martial arts since he was eight.
Why Training Time Is Everything
Let’s clear something up right now: There is a massive difference between starting martial arts as a kid and starting as an adult.
“I don’t think the average person—or anyone just about to start martial arts—really understands how big of a difference it makes when someone has been training since they were a kid.”
Kids absorb technique differently. Their bodies just learn. They drill moves without even thinking about it. By the time they’re 20, those moves are automatic. If you come in as an adult, you’ve got to make up for all that lost time.
A Quick List: Starting Young vs. Starting Late

Muscle Memory: Kids build it without effort. Adults have to repeat moves way more.

Time on the Mat: Ten years as a kid means thousands of classes, live rolls, and sparring rounds.

Learning Curve: It’s steep for adults—every rep, every day, counts for double.

That’s why I’m proud to say: I never lost to anyone who had less training time than me. It’s a small thing, but a huge deal personally.
The No-Life Grind: How I Closed the Gap
So, how did I even become a top 10 UFC fighter when I started so late? Here’s the honest answer: I had no life. No parties. Almost no drinking (three or four times a year, max, even in my early 20s). No sleeping in. Just work, train, recover—repeat. How My Days Looked in My 20s:That’s it. While my friends were going out having a good time, I was out here chasing an impossible goal. Was it fun? Not really. But it’s what got me there. A Tall AdvantageI’m not gonna kid myself—being tall helped a lot, especially starting late. If I hadn’t had the reach and size I did, it would have been a much tougher climb.
My Toughest Losses: Training Time Always Tells
Even looking back at my last major fight—in karate combat—my opponent was younger, true, but he’d been at it even longer than me, since he was a kid. He had 30 pro fights and started capoeira and jiu-jitsu super early. He was 33, but with easily 27+ years of training. That’s like going up against a black belt in experience. When you lose to someone with that much more time on the mat, it puts things in perspective.
Training Young vs. Starting Late: What You Need to Know
If you walk into any gym at 10 years old and say you want to be a fighter, you’re gonna get a totally different path than if you walk in at 20 and say the same thing. Kids might change their minds along the way—most do—but if you actually stick to it, you’re miles ahead of the late-starters. Two Different Paths10-Year-Old:

Gradual path

Room to grow, make mistakes, collect thousands of reps

20-Year-Old:

Fast-track, high-pressure

No time for anything else if you’re serious

“The path for a 10-year-old is COMPLETELY different than it is for a 20 or 22-year-old.”
And nowadays? The gap’s even wider. Tons of wrestlers and martial artists are hitting the mats since the time they can walk, sometimes just because it’s a family thing, or their big brother was into it. Whether or not they wanted to be pro fighters, they racked up years of work before ever thinking about the UFC.
The Rep Game: Why Adults Have To Work Harder
If you’re an adult, you’ve gotta cram 10 years’ worth of drilling into just a handful—if you want to keep up. Kids can take their time; adults can’t. Let’s Break It DownYounger fighters:

Fewer reps per class, but tons of years to build it up

Older starters:

Need to do way more reps in a short period

No days off if you want a shot

If you’re 20 and your opponent started at 10, you’re battling a whole decade of hidden advantage. My Solution: Drill Until You Can’t Get It WrongOnce I realized this, I got obsessive about drilling—especially grappling and wrestling. That's what led to three of my UFC wins by submission and why I never got beat on the ground in a fight. I drilled religiously: non-stop reps, every single session. My Drilling Routine

Daily drilling (even after work)

Emphasized grappling/wrestling

Focused on key escapes and wall get-up techniques

That’s how I have three submission wins in the UFC. That’s how I’ve never been beat on the ground.

Game Planning: Making Up for Lost Time As a Late Starter
If you’re starting at 20 and fighting guys who started at 10, realize you need a different strategy. You’re always playing catch-up, and you can never let yourself forget that. A Specific Game Plan for Late Starters

Maximize Rep Count: Every drilling session should count for triple.

Work on Escapes: Get hard to hold down, hard to submit.

Study Your Opponents: Use your adult brain—learn smarter, not just harder.

Embrace Physical Advantages: Use your reach, height, or athleticism.

Stay Disciplined: No shortcuts, no “I’ll take today off.”

Is It Worth It? Lessons Learned From the Grind
Let’s be honest—starting late is a constant uphill battle. You’re working against years of lost time, and there’s no way to fake your way around it. But if you outwork everyone and use every available advantage—physical, mental, and strategic—you can make it work.
“If you’re starting at 20 years old and everyone else started at 10 or 5? It’s going to be an uphill battle. But it’s beatable.”

Takeaways: My Best Advice for Late-Starters in Martial Arts
If you’re thinking about starting MMA or fighting in your 20s—or later—just know what you’re up against, but don’t let it scare you off. Here’s what I really want you to remember:

Starting late means doubling or tripling the effort. Don’t waste time wishing you started earlier; go all-in with the time you’ve got.

Drilling is your best friend. There’s no substitute for mat hours.

Life balance will suffer. It has to, if you really want to catch up.

Use your unique strengths. If you have a physical advantage, lean into it.

Be proud if you only lose to guys (or girls) with more time. That’s a mark of real accomplishment.

Final Thoughts: Don’t Be Afraid to Be Different
I used to look at my losses and beat myself up, but now I see that I never lost to anyone who had less training time. That’s huge for me. If you’re starting late and still making progress? That’s something to be proud of—no matter what the record says. At the end of the day, fighting is a wild ride. Highs you’ll never forget, lows that will sting forever. But if you keep grinding, keep drilling, and stay hungry? That’s what really separates the lifers from the rest. Good luck out there. And remember: It’s always worth fighting for your goals, no matter when you start.
“You’re never too old to start. Just remember: the earlier you start, the bigger the jump you have to make up. But you never know what you can do until you try.”
Thanks for reading, guys. FROM ZERO TO UFC: REFLECTIONS OF MY JOURNEY

Exploring Striking Martial Arts for MMA: Boxing, Muay Thai, and More
What's up, everyone? Today, we're diving deep into the world of striking martial arts and their effectiveness in mixed martial arts (MMA). As a passionate practitioner, I've been asked to share insights on different martial arts styles, such as Taekwondo, karate, and Muay Thai, including how they can mix to elevate your striking game. Specifically, I'll highlight why boxing is considered king in MMA and examine the role of other martial arts.
Why Boxing Reigns Supreme in MMA
Boxing has long been hailed as the cornerstone of striking within MMA. The use of small gloves accentuates the importance of precision and speed. This isn't just speculation; we've seen evidence in fighting arenas worldwide, such as One FC, where experienced Muay Thai fighters with hundreds of fights sometimes find themselves knocked out due to the switch from big gloves to little gloves. These gloves drastically change the dynamics of a fight, making boxing, with its crisp punches and defensive maneuvers, incredibly potent. Understanding Glove DynamicsThe difference between big gloves and little gloves isn't merely size; it impacts defense, strike power, and fighting style. Little glove fighting requires a higher level of technical proficiency, seeing more successful knockouts and techniques adapted from boxing.
Getting Started in MMA
If you're new to the world of MMA and want to focus on striking, starting with boxing is a wise choice. This is especially true if you're starting later in life, as striking techniques can be honed relatively quicker than grappling skills. The Challenges of GrapplingWhile grappling is a fundamental component of MMA, the learning curve can be steep, especially if you're aiming for high levels like the UFC. Fighters like Georges St-Pierre (GSP) are exceptions, often being freak athletes with unique attributes such as unprecedented grip strength. For most, becoming proficient in grappling takes longer due to fewer repetitions compared to striking.Developing Striking Skills QuicklyStriking, particularly boxing, allows for rapid skill development. To illustrate, consider the number of jabs you can throw in a three-minute round versus the number of double-leg takedowns. Striking techniques offer more opportunities for practice, making boxing an ideal starting point for aspiring MMA fighters.
Enhancing Your Game: Dealing with Low Kicks
After establishing a solid boxing foundation, you'll need to adapt to low kicks, a prevalent technique in combat sports. Dutch kickboxing and Muay Thai offer invaluable strategies for dealing with and utilizing low kicks effectively. Dutch Kickboxing vs. Muay ThaiWhile Muay Thai is renowned for its clinch game and intricate techniques, Dutch kickboxing presents a brilliant alternative with its focus on hand setups and seamless integration of kicks and punches. Throw a punch before launching a kick to keep your opponent guessing and open up more avenues for attack. The Role of Clinch in MMAOften misunderstood, the clinch game in MMA differs from traditional Muay Thai due to the threat of being taken down. Fighters frequently neutralize the clinch by controlling their opponent's hips, thereby removing the option to throw knees effectively.Analyzing Its EffectivenessMMA has evolved to incorporate a blend of artistic techniques, leading to a shift away from clinch dominance. Unless the clinch is used by a taller or more athletic fighter, its effectiveness is limited.
Comparing Martial Arts: Muay Thai, Karate, and Taekwondo
Leg kicks are integral to Muay Thai, contributing to its perceived superiority over karate and Taekwondo. Removing the clinch from Muay Thai emphasizes the potency of leg kicks, which are relatively easier to execute than high waist kicks seen in karate and Taekwondo. Mastering Karate and Taekwondo TechniquesWhen considering karate and Taekwondo fighters like Wonderboy or MVP, their point-style techniques stand out. Moves such as spinning back kicks and lead leg hook kicks require significant practice and athleticism, but they're worthwhile investments for fighters with natural agility. Incorporate these over time for a diversified striking toolkit.
Crafting Your Path in MMA
Here’s a step-by-step guide for aspiring MMA strikers:

Start with Boxing: Spend at least a year honing your boxing skills. Mastering punch techniques and defense gives you a strong basis.

Incorporate Dutch Kickboxing or Muay Thai: Spend another year practicing kickboxing to blend kicks with punches effectively. Dutch kickboxing is optimal here due to its strategic hand setups.

Expand to Karate and Taekwondo: Once you’ve established solid striking fundamentals, explore specific karate and Taekwondo techniques, adding flair to your arsenal. Tailor this based on your fighting style—pressure fighters may prefer other styles over Taekwondo.

Conclusion
Striking martial arts offer invaluable skills for aspiring MMA fighters, with boxing providing a robust foundational discipline. Integrating elements of kickboxing, Muay Thai, karate, and Taekwondo can enhance your approach, but it's essential to tailor your exploration based on your attributes and goals. Whether you're a counter-striker leveraging karate's finesse or a powerhouse utilizing Muay Thai's explosive kicks, the striking universe is a labyrinth of opportunity for those willing to master it. Keep training, embrace the diversity of techniques, and watch your MMA game evolve to new heights.
Mastering the Art of Sidekicks in MMA and Kickboxing
Welcome to another deep dive into the world of mixed martial arts (MMA), a space where strategy and technique converge to deliver powerful and effective combat styles. Today, we're zooming in on a particular kick that can transform your fighting game if executed right: the sidekick. Whether you're a seasoned fighter or an up-and-coming enthusiast, learning how to integrate a sidekick into your style, especially if you often switch stances, can be game-changing.
Why Sidekicks?
Sidekicks, when done from an open stance, can become one of your most formidable weapons. They're particularly useful if you're someone who frequently switches between orthodox and southpaw stances. This versatility can give you a strategic edge over your opponents. Understanding StancesStance switching is common in today's MMA matches. Fighters like Drake, Izzy, and Jack Della Madalena are known for their ability to switch stances, making them unpredictable and difficult to deal with. But why is stance switching beneficial for sidekicks? Let's take a closer look. Open vs. Closed Stance:

Open Stance: Involves an orthodox fighter facing a southpaw. It offers a direct line of attack and defense, making sidekicks more accessible and less risky.

Closed Stance: Orthodox versus orthodox or southpaw versus southpaw. Here, the risk of receiving leg kicks is higher, particularly because of the traditional bladed stance, which is not ideal for sidekicks.

Why Choose a Sidekick?Sidekicks mainly serve a defensive purpose, but they are versatile enough to become offensive when necessary. The key to their effectiveness is precision and timing.
"The real danger in doing it in the closed stance is that leg kicks. Leg kicks are very hard to deal with if you're in a very traditional bladed stance."
In an open stance, sidekicks can protect you from leg kicks that might be harder to deflect otherwise. Fighters can execute sidekicks while staying largely protected, provided they maintain the appropriate stance.
Perfecting the Technique
If you're just getting started with sidekicks or looking to refine them, here's a step-by-step approach:

Start Slow: Concentrate on accuracy before speed. Practicing slowly will help you perfect your form.

Focus on Stance: Make sure you are comfortable fighting in an open stance. This minimizes the risk of absorbent leg kicks.

Work on Balance: Bladed stance helps in maintaining balance when executing a sidekick. Stability is crucial.

Progress Gradually: As your accuracy improves, gradually increase the speed of your kicks.

Defensive StrategySidekicks act as a great deterrent against opponents looking to close in. They create space and keep your adversary at bay, disrupting their rhythm and offensive strategies. Defensive Tactics Include:

Low-Commitment Kicks: Sometimes, it's effective to throw a sidekick without the intention of landing it. This tactic forces the opponent to back off instinctively.

Psychological Advantage: Even a leg lift can make your opponent step back, giving you control over the pacing and distancing.

My Experience: Learning from the Past
I first incorporated sidekicks into my fighting strategy about a decade ago. Notably, I used them effectively during my fight against Francisco Trinaldo in the UFC. Facing a Southpaw like him, my sidekick arsenal came in handy for defense, allowing me to land numerous sidekicks while staying largely unscathed.
"The first time I really threw a lot of it was when I fought Francisco Trinaldo in UFC."
Fights like these underline how tactics like sidekicks can mitigate risk and optimize offensive maneuvers. They illustrate how a well-timed sidekick can shift the dynamics within a ring, turning a tight match around.
Navigating Leg Kicks
Leg kicks are a formidable force to contend with. From the open stance, they're easier to step off from or counter, even though checking can sometimes lead to risks, as it did for Anderson Silva against Chris Weidman. Learning from the Pros:Watching skilled martial artists navigate leg kicks can offer valuable insights. Fighters often use sidekicks to control range and maintain a safe distance, thereby minimizing the risk of a successfully landed leg kick.
Emulating the Greats
Switching stances and effective sidekick use are traits embodied by martial artists like Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson. His intuitive use of open stances for kicks and closed stances for boxing exemplifies how to best employ stance switching and sidekick techniques strategically.
"He stands Southpaw more for kicking, and then he stands orthodox more for boxing."
The New GenerationYounger fighters keen on mastering these arts are already following in the footsteps of athletes who perfectly execute these techniques. Watching and emulating their stance and style transitions can be quite enlightening.
Concluding Thoughts
Incorporating sidekicks into your fighting style isn't just about adding one more move to your playbook—it's about creating more opportunities for defensive and offensive maneuvers simultaneously. If you, as a fighter, can switch stances and feel at home in open stances, then a sidekick could be a surefire addition to your arsenal. ADD SIDEKICKS TO YOUR MMA GAME

Thoughts on the Belal Muhammad vs. Jack Della Maddalena Fight
Hey everyone! Just checked out the Belal Muhammad and Jack Della Maddalena fight. It was quite the showdown, and I've got some thoughts I'd love to share with you. If you're as obsessed with MMA as I am, then I think you'll find this breakdown pretty intriguing.
An Unexpected Strategy from Balal
Right off the bat, I was really surprised by Belal's approach—or rather, the lack of a particular strategy I expected to see. From the get-go, I assumed Belal would focus more on takedowns. It seems like a no-brainer given Jack's fighting style. He's a top-tier striker and has a stance-switching game that's becoming essential in modern MMA fighting. The Importance of Stance SwitchingSwitching stances is no longer just a flashy move in MMA. It's transformed from being a purely offensive tactic to a multifaceted strategy that can significantly alter a fight's dynamics.
"This is the future, guys. The future is switching stances."
Several fighters, like Dricus and Jon Jones, have shown that stance switching can confuse and protect against opponents just as effectively as delivering those heavy punches or perfectly timed kicks. When you switch, opponents often hesitate, unsure of your next move. This hesitation is where a fighter like Jack shines. He didn't simply stand his ground against Belal. Jack used his versatile stance switching to his defensive advantage—keeping him on the offensive while shunning away Belal's potential takedowns. It's baffling that Belal didn't capitalize on a more wrestling-oriented strategy where he could potentially have had the upper hand.
Belal's Missed Opportunities
With Jack's knack for changing his stance, Belal had a prime opportunity to go for more grappling exchanges. As a coach, you'd expect more attempts to bring the fight to the ground, especially when one fighter like Belal could have dominated in that area. Why Are Stance Switches So Effective?

Unpredictability: Opponents can't anticipate your next move easily.

Defense and Offense: It serves dual purposes, keeping fighters balanced.

Psychological Edge: Hesitation from opponents can be exploited.

For those of us watching, it was surprising that these potential openings weren't leveraged by Belal. Instead, he found himself on the receiving end of Jack's diverse skill set, from boxing to grappling defense.
Jack's Championship-Winning Performance
Jack Della Maddalena definitely delivered a champion-worthy performance. A fighter needs more than solid striking or expert grappling alone. As we saw, Jack brought the full package. He boxed effectively, defended with precision, and utilized powerful round kicks to control the pace and style of the match.
"He's very well-rounded, can defend, can grapple, can wrestle, defend the wrestling and switch stances."
Comprehensive Fighting SkillsJack seamlessly integrated different fighting techniques:

Switching Stances: Utilizing this technique for both untapped flexibility and psychological edge.

Boxing and Kicks: Using these in tandem to dictate the fight's flow.

Grappling Defense: Strong ability to counter any takedown attempts.

He clearly did not earn the title by accident. This kind of well-rounded skill set is enviable and a dream for many fighters—to be feared in every aspect of the fight game. What's Next for Belal? The burning question is, where does Belal go from here? His performance, though lacking in execution, shows promise. With the right adjustments and more emphasis on his grappling abilities, we could witness an exciting bounce-back. "I'm curious to see if he can bounce back from this," goes the hope for Belal, as he gears for the next fight. Potential Roads AheadFor Belal to return stronger, a few areas can be the focal points:

Sharpening Grappling Techniques: Enhancing this could have turned the tide.

Strategic Fighting Plans: Deploying strategies that leverage his strengths.

Learning from this Fight: Using the experience to fuel a comeback.

Join the Conversation!
I hope this deep dive into the Belal vs. Jack fight has given some clarity and maybe sparked a few ideas of your own.
Celebrating a Legend: The Retirement of José Aldo
José Aldo, a titan in the world of mixed martial arts, has officially retired, leaving behind a legacy that will be fondly remembered by fans and fighters alike. Despite not catching his final match, many enthusiasts claim Aldo was unfairly judged, possibly due to the fight happening in his opponent's hometown or country. Regardless, Aldo’s contributions to the sport remain undiminished.
Remembering the Achievements of José Aldo
José Aldo's journey in the fight world is nothing short of legendary. Before his notable bout against Conor McGregor, Aldo reigned supreme with an impressive 18-fight win streak. This remarkable string of victories saw him excel in both the WEC and the UFC, showcasing his dominance by capturing and defending the UFC belt multiple times. The Man Behind the FameAldo wasn't just known for his fighting skills; he was revered as a great ambassador for the sport. He was not invincible, but his reign was a testament to his dedication and skill. For years, Aldo was undefeated, carving out his name as one of the most respected figures in MMA.
"José Aldo was the man. Coming up at one point before he lost to Conor McGregor, he was on like an 18-fight win streak which is crazy."

Skills That Defined Aldo's Career
José Aldo was celebrated for his dynamic fighting style. His performances were a masterclass in technical striking and grappling artistry.
