Hey guys! Today, we're diving into something crucial for all the young fighters out there aiming to climb the ranks, whether it’s the UFC or turning pro. It’s a game-changer—asking questions, and lots of them.

Why Asking Questions is Essential

The Drive to Improve

Young fighters often train hard with dreams of making it big, but to fast-track your progress, you need the right mindset. Asking questions in the gym is essential. Why? Because the more questions you ask, the faster you learn and improve. It’s simple math!

The more questions you ask and the more you learn, the faster you're gonna get better.

<img id="fljny7axyam28freg4" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/34u8MdKpyaDXTen8wwYvlFF8GehlYZttWKHTwbcn4AVjAHiJVOGSTOqg5AFwT75Y.png" alt="Elbow punch in karate. Your opponent is serious and well-trained, so you need to be too.

Starting Late? No Problem!

Age is Just a Number
Nowadays, starting at 18 or 19 can feel late because some fighters have been training since childhood. By age 25, some can have more experience than a 37-year-old, thanks to thousands of reps in wrestling, boxing, or taekwondo.

Catching Up Quickly

What if you’re starting late? Ask a lot of questions. I was always that guy in the gym, and yes, it annoyed some coaches. But, those who get annoyed often aren’t the best at correcting techniques either.

Timing is Everything

When to Ask
There’s a right time to ask questions. Don’t interrupt a session with irrelevant questions. Instead, pull your coach or experienced teammates aside after class or during downtime.

Daily Curiosity

Every day you come to the gym, you should have a new question. This should be your mantra. It’s how you get good, fast.

Learning from the Best

A Master’s Approach

I trained with Master Cena, a world-class coach, who structured classes around questions. Walking in, he’d ask, “Do you have any questions?” And I was usually ready with five.

I loved how he structured his classes. And this is kind of how I try to structure mine.

Private Lessons Through Inquiry

By asking specific questions, you effectively get a private lesson. The class becomes tailored to your needs, answering your questions and allowing you to drill those techniques.

Embrace Technology

Video Your Techniques

Capture techniques on your phone. It’s vital to ensure you're practicing correctly. Incorrect reps are worse than none because you have to unlearn bad habits.

The worst thing you can do is learn a technique and practice it the wrong way.

Precise Practice

Before drilling, review your videos. Detail matters—where the hand is, how the knee bends, these small adjustments make a big difference.

Journey to the UFC

My Path

Starting at 20 and making it to the UFC by 24.5 shows the power of questions. Even when I got there, I didn’t stop asking. Surrounded by world-class coaches, I continued absorbing knowledge like a sponge.

The Takeaway

Never Stop Asking
In martial arts, knowledge is power. The fastest way to improve isn’t just drilling but understanding through relentless inquiry. Keep questioning, keep learning, and watch your skills grow.

It's important to ask questions and there's nothing gonna get you faster. I'm gonna get you better in a faster time period than asking a lot of questions.

If you're starting in martial arts and looking for guidance, check out my book, "The Ultimate Guide to Choosing Your Martial Arts School and Instructor."

Join the Conversation
Got topics you'd like covered or questions? The Power of Questions: A Young Fighter’s Guide to Rapid Improvement

Hey there, fighters! This one's for all the young, hungry warriors out there looking to make their mark. You better be working hard because the competition is fierce. Today's fighting scene is brimming with young talent that's not only skilled but also incredibly dedicated. So, let me break it down for you—show you what you're up against and why it's crucial to up your game.

The Rise of Young Talent

Let me tell you, I've been to a lot of fights recently. As a full-time coach, navigating events like Karate Combat and the UFC in Paris, I’ve witnessed some incredible up-and-coming talent. The question is, are you ready for this level of competition?

The New Breed of Fighters

In Karate Combat, I met a kid who's a force to reckon with. Imagine this: 60 amateur boxing fights and over 150 Taekwondo competitions under his belt. That's right, his family runs a Taekwondo gym, and the sport has been in his blood since childhood. He's only 25, and yet he's accomplished so much already.

Fighting is like a drug—it brings the highest of highs and lowest of lows.

This young fighter’s resume is a testament to what you're up against. With three knockouts in Karate Combat, he's the embodiment of experience meeting youthful energy.

The Experience Gap

Many fighters today have been training longer than some older competitors. At 37, I started at 20, which gave me 17 years of experience. Yet, some 25-year-olds have surpassed my training time because they began as kids. Simply put, if you're just starting, you've got some catching up to do.

What It Means to Start Young

Back in the early MMA days, starting in your 20s could still lead to a great career—unless you're a freak athlete. But now? The game has changed. If you're between 19 and 22 and only now stepping into the gym, you better reevaluate your path.

This is the hurt business. Humiliation meets glory.

Time to Get Real

Training for an hour or two each day and expecting to reach the UFC is a pipe dream. Let me give it to you straight: it's delusional to think minimal effort will catapult you to the top. Guys, this is a wake-up call.

The Seriousness of Your Commitment

Let me emphasize, the fighting world is not a game. The depth of technique and thousands of repetitions separate the good from the great. For those who start late, there's no shortcut. You're going to need to sacrifice and dedicate yourself fully if reaching a high-level organization is your goal.

What You Need to Do

Increase Your Training: Consistency and dedication are non-negotiable.

Embrace the Grind: Thousands of reps aren't just numbers—they're your foundation.

Stay Humble and Hungry: Learn from those who've paved the way and remain open to growth.

Take Action

If you're new to martial arts or looking for a gym, check out my book, The Ultimate Guide to Choosing Your Martial Arts School and Instructor. It's available on Amazon and designed to help you make an informed choice.

You can't catch them with an hour a day.

Parting Thoughts

Fighters, remember: this is your journey. The challenge is great, but so are the rewards. The young fighters out there have leveled up—have you? Take every opportunity seriously, stay focused, and you might just become the next big thing.

Leave a comment if there are other subjects you want me to tackle. Until then, train hard, fight smart, and keep pushing your limits!
Thank you, and see you next time.

YOUNG FIGHTERS YOU BETTER BE WORKING!

What's up, guys? Today, I want to dive into a compelling topic about the UFC – the undeniable difference between the top ten fighters in each weight class and everyone else. From my experience and observations, it's like the top ten exists in a completely different organization. Let me explain why.

A Class of Their Own

The first thing you need to understand is that the gap between the UFC top ten and the rest is staggering. Journeying through the rankings, I found out first-hand just how different the top-level competitors are. This isn’t just about being better; it’s an entirely different league.

Experience is Key

One pivotal reason the top ten stand apart is their extensive background in training. Most of these athletes have been honing their skills their entire lives. This was a huge challenge for me. I started my training later than most, and catching up to those who had years of training behind them was incredibly tough.

The UFC top ten is different than the rest of the UFC, and it's not even close.

My Journey: From Novice to Contender

When I entered the UFC, my record in the first ten fights was an impressive 9-1. At the time, only two other fighters had achieved that – one of them being Conor McGregor. But reaching the top ten, I quickly realized it was like fighting in a completely different organization.

Athleticism and Experience

Two vital aspects set the top ten apart:

Athleticism: These are phenomenal athletes - faster, stronger, and more explosive.

Experience: They possess years of world-class training in wrestling, boxing, and other disciplines.

To give context, consider fighters like Gaethje, Poirier, and Tyrone Woodley. Not only have they been training their whole lives, but they are also exceptional athletes.

Late Start and Unique Challenges

I didn’t start training until I was 20, which is quite late. By 24 and a half, I was in the UFC. That’s just four and a half years of training, including time off for surgeries. Being tall and having excellent cardio helped, but competing against lifelong athletes was a challenge.

Being tall definitely helped me, like, a lot.

Training Intensity

I used to train around five hours every day outside of training camps. It wasn’t all hard training; a part of it was focusing on technique. This intense regime was crucial to catching up to those who had been mastering their skills from a young age.

The Top Ten Fighters

To illustrate further, let's look at some specific fighters who exemplify the difference vividly:

Justin Gaethje

Dustin Poirier

Tyrone Woodley (when he was the champion)

These fighters haven’t just trained for years; they bring in fast-twitch muscle abilities, speed, and strength, coupled with their techniques.

BOXING AND MMA EXPERIENCE

Take Conor McGregor, for example. Before switching to MMA, he had about 60 amateur boxing fights. Bringing this experience into the MMA world gave him a significant edge over many competitors.

These guys are freak athletes that also have years and years of technique.

Conclusion

In summary, the top ten fighters in the UFC are different breeds, owing to their incredible athleticism, lifelong training, and unparalleled experience. The gap between them and the rest of the organization is substantial, almost like comparing apples to oranges.

It's crucial to understand this dynamic if you're aiming to break into the MMA world, whether as a fan or a fighter. The dedication, athleticism, and years of training set these top contenders apart, creating a chasm that can be difficult to bridge.

For those new to martial arts and seeking a gym, check out my book, The Ultimate Guide to Choosing Your Martial Arts School Instructor. WHY THE UFC TOP 10 ARE A DIFFERENT BREED!

What's up, fight fans? If you watched UFC 307 last night, you saw Alex Pereira facing off against Khalil Rountree. What a fight! Today, we're diving into the key adjustments Pereira made to secure his victory. Buckle up!

The Magic of Alex Pereira - A Quick Recap

First of all, Alex Pereira is just too world-class and too good. The man has an immense level of kickboxing experience, and unless someone can knock him out quickly, he's going to figure them out. He has too much experience throwing hands and kicks to not adjust during the fight.

Khalil Rountree started off real quick. He was bouncing around, coming in with straight punches, and sometimes doubling up on his left hand. Pereira was pulling back a bit initially, but he quickly readjusted. Here are some critical adjustments he made that led to his success:

Adjustment #1: The Outside Calf Kick

Pereira’s first big move was the outside calf kick.

Understand this. Alex Pereira is special. Like, I'm not saying this won't work for most people. I'm saying it won't work as effectively for most people as it does for Alex Pereira.

The guy clearly has incredible knockout power and dense bones, making his kicks particularly devastating. Four or five clean calf kicks, and Khalil Rountree started limping noticeably. This significantly affected Rountree’s movement. By the second or third round, Rountree was more stationary, and his mobility was drastically reduced.

Why the Calf Kick Works

Reduces Mobility: Landing repeated calf kicks on the lead leg diminishes the opponent's movement.

Builds Up Damage: Accumulating damage over time means the opponent can't maintain their initial explosiveness.

Adjustment #2: Stepping Inside for the Jab

Another crucial tactic was Pereira stepping inside foot position to land his jab effectively. Khalil Rountree, being quick and explosive, was landing some good left hands. Pereira was initially pulling back to avoid them.

But then Pereira started changing his approach. He moved to an inside foot position—a pretty typical open stance move for a southpaw versus orthodox match-up.

Outside Foot Position: Lands the rear hand.

Inside Foot Position: Lands the lead hand.

Instead of just pulling back, Pereira used his length and solid defense to step in and start jabbing, leading to a new dynamic in the fight. This jab was incredibly effective.

The Power of Pereira's Jab

Pereira’s jab is special. It's probably as hard as most people's cross. This jab did significant damage to Rountree’s eyes and started splitting his defense.

The Finish

All these adjustments set the stage for Pereira to get the win and eventually the finish. These strategic moves show why Pereira is considered special and why many regard him as one of the best.

Conclusion

So, to recap, Alex Pereira's key adjustments were:

Using the outside calf kick to limit Rountree's movement.

Stepping inside to land the jab and break down Rountree's defenses.

These moves showcase Pereira’s high fight IQ and his ability to adapt mid-fight. It was a masterclass performance. What's your take on the fight? ALEX PEREIRA UFC 307: Masterclass in Adjustments

Hey everyone! Today, I want to update you all on my recent knockout loss in Karate Combat. First off, I want to thank everyone who's prayed for me, messaged me, and showed their concern. I truly appreciate all the support. Secondly, I want to clear up some of the rumors and weird stuff circulating on the internet. I've seen videos and heard a lot of fabrications. So let's set the record straight!

The Knockout

So, I got knocked out; it was pretty bad. I got caught with a double kick, and after that, I had a seizure. This has unfortunately led to a bunch of rumors.

Addressing the Rumors

I've heard some wild things:

That I almost died.

That I was in a coma for two days.

That I was on my deathbed.

None of this is true, guys.

What Really Happened

Here’s the actual breakdown:

Immediate Aftermath: After the knockout, I did have a seizure.

Hospital Visit: I went to the hospital, where I was put on seizure medication.

Medication Effects: The seizure medication made me very delirious for about a day and a half.

The Effects of the Medication

The medication had some serious side effects:

Made me feel very messed up.

Had me worried that something was really wrong.

Once I got off the medication after about three days, I felt perfectly fine. Yes, the knockout was brutal, but the medication's effects were worse in some ways.

Medical Tests and Clearance

I underwent extensive medical testing, including:

A three-day brain scan with a world-class neurologist.

MRI scans and other tests.

Test Results

All tests came back negative.

I was cleared to fight again if I wanted to.

Thoughts on Returning to Fighting

For the record, I am not planning to return to fighting at this time. To those spreading false information for clickbait, that's just wrong.

I've never had headaches after getting knocked out. I've never had concussed symptoms.

My Healthcare Experience

Every time I've been knocked out, I've been fortunate enough to

Receive CT scans

Never experience concussed symptoms

Never feel delirious or have headaches

Fighting in organizations like Karate Combat and UFC means getting high-level medical care after every fight. They make sure fighters are treated and get to see a doctor immediately.

Setting the Record Straight

Seizure Facts

Yes, I did have a seizure, which is definitely scary.

The medication had some strong side effects.

Recovery and Health Status

I've been given a clean bill of health.

I'm currently not planning to fight again.

My focus is now on recovery and health.

Thank you to everyone who has shown concern and reached out. JAMES VICK KNOCK OUT UPDATE

The Evolution of Weight Cutting in the UFC: My Journey and Observations

What's up, guys? Today, I want to dive into a topic that's near and dear to my heart—weight cutting in the UFC. Over the years, the landscape of weight cutting has transformed drastically, making the process more efficient and safer for fighters. I've had the privilege of accompanying a UFC fighter, Victor Altamirano, through his fights in Mexico City and Paris this past year, and the changes I've observed are nothing short of remarkable.

A Look Back at the Old Days

When I was in the UFC, the experience of weight cutting was vastly different. The UFC's Performance Institute (PI) and their overall approach to fighter nutrition weren't as developed.

The Struggles of the Past

Back when I was in the UFC, a lot of guys didn't have a nutritionist and they couldn't afford one.

Most fighters back then had to fend for themselves. Nutritionists like George Lockhart and Dolce were few and far between. If you were new to the organization, securing a nutritionist was almost out of reach.

Personal Experience

I personally worked with George Lockhart. I'd fly him out for fight week, and his fee would come out of my purse after the fight, adding to the financial strain of being a broke fighter. Despite the cost, the experience was invaluable—we became like brothers.

Transition to Modern Times

Over the years, the UFC has made significant strides in supporting their fighters, especially regarding weight cutting. Upon reaching the UFC, the process becomes much more streamlined and accessible.

<img id="3llnd0hvz5m1qx9ci6" src="https://cdn.durable.co/covers/3520kkWKBsr6Utnwjziid9xNL4gYrmWC6be5vNsoKhjKUvtcVeud8REOnjAVFcUE.jpg" alt="Woman in kimono practicing. So you get there to the UFC, you get there four or five days before the events, and you go talk to the people. They have their own nutritionists.

The UFC provides fighters with meal plans tailored for the critical days leading up to weigh-ins. These plans are meticulously measured, with no sodium, ensuring fighters meet weight requirements safely.

The Weight Cut Process

The UFC now employs scientific methods and provides the necessary tools for a seamless weight cut.

Preparing the Food

Meal plans include small, sodium-free meals and snacks, laid out with precise nutritional needs in mind.

Bath and Sauna Procedures

With portable saunas, sauna suits, and blankets readily available, the UFC arms fighters with everything they need. Detailed instructions, like maintaining hot tub temperatures (starting at 104°F and increasing up to 110°F), are provided to ensure precision.

Benefits and Ease of Modern Weight Cuts

Cutting weight has become far simpler, making it almost puzzling why some fighters still miss their targets. While discipline plays a role, the UFC has made the process dummy-proof, illustrating their commitment to fighter safety and success.

The UFC makes it very easy, and it's so easy now to cut weight in the UFC compared to the way it used to be. It's very impressive how far they've come along.

Assistance During Fight Week

During fight week, the UFC provides direct support. They even offer to send personnel to your room to assist with the weight cut process. This level of assistance is a game-changer for fighters, making what was once a grueling ordeal much more manageable.

Conclusion

Weight cutting in the UFC has come a long way, transforming from a chaotic, risky process to a scientifically backed, well-supported practice. For aspiring fighters, reaching the UFC means no longer having to struggle alone. With the right guidance and support, making weight is simpler than ever.
If you're pursuing a career in the UFC and find weight cutting challenging, know that once you get there, you'll have the necessary support to make it manageable. Just listen, follow the instructions, and stay disciplined.

If you have any other subjects you'd like me to talk about, just leave a comment below.
