Hey there, fighters! Today, I want to share an important message for all the young fighters out there who are coming up in the game. Over the past few months, I've seen a lot of fights get canceled, opponents pull out, and various issues arise. It’s easy to get frustrated or discouraged, but trust me, I've been there, and I know exactly how it feels.

The Frequent Challenges in a Fighter's Journey

When I was an amateur, I faced numerous setbacks that left me feeling discouraged. Even as a lower-level pro, I encountered frustrations. This is just part of the journey. Once, I had three opponents switch out on the same day I was supposed to fight in Arkansas. Imagine weighing in, only to find out your opponent decided they wanted an MMA fight instead of the kickboxing match you prepped for. I had to adjust, moving up 15 pounds, then later they wouldn’t approve it, forcing me to move down and fight someone with much more experience.

Despite these challenges, I found a way to win that fight. These kinds of situations happen all the time. You might have an opponent switch four days before your match, just like one of my students recently did. But he adjusted and still managed to win. Here’s the key takeaway:

You are not training for a specific opponent. You are training to be a better fighter, a better martial artist.

Stay Focused on the Bigger Picture

It's easy to get caught up in the moment when things go sideways. But always keep the big picture in mind. Your ultimate goal might be to make it to the UFC, Bellator, One FC, or any big organization, whether in kickboxing or boxing. Remember, your training is about becoming a better, well-rounded martial artist. Not just beating a single opponent.

Year-Round Training and Mental Preparation

Train year-round, not just when you have a fight coming up. Sure, you might diet more strictly and train harder when preparing for a match. But continual, consistent training is vital. Training camps might be grueling, but they are more intense than your usual training regime, which is why you need a solid base built via consistent effort.

Staying mentally prepared is crucial. Sometimes, fights will be canceled, cards moved, or opponents switch at the last minute. It can be incredibly frustrating, but having a positive attitude can make a world of difference.

Anything you do with a positive attitude is still better than doing it with a negative attitude.

Embrace the Training Process

One of the best pieces of advice I can give is to fall in love with the training process. Train to be a martial artist all year round. If your opponent pulls out or the fight gets canceled, it won't feel as devastating because you love the training itself.

Keep your head up and stay focused on your journey as a martial artist. If you embrace the process, you'll get better even through setbacks. And in the end, your love for the sport will shine through, regardless of the circumstances.
