DO STEROIDS MAKE A FIGHTER SUPERHUMAN!?

Steroids and performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) have been a controversial topic in the world of sports, particularly in combat sports like mixed martial arts (MMA). The question remains: do these substances genuinely elevate a fighter's abilities to superhuman levels? Or is the advantage more psychological than physiological?

The Personal Perspective

As someone who has been closely involved with the UFC and MMA, I've had firsthand observations and anonymous conversations that shed some light on this subject. Let's dive deeper into this complex issue.

The Era Before and After USADA

Before the implementation of strict testing by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), the MMA sport might have experienced a different environment where the use of PEDs could have been more rampant. Fighters might resort to steroids to recover from injuries rapidly or to gain a physical edge.

After USADA's integration into the sport, frequent and rigorous testing became a norm. I personally underwent close to 30 tests and thankfully never failed one. The new era brought about a significant reduction in the use of steroids, although the complete eradication is still a matter of debate.

Psychological Over Physical?

From the tales around the gym and firsthand accounts, the psychological dependence on steroids seems prevalent. Fighters who have used steroids sometimes feel invincible with them and vulnerable without. This psychological crutch can often lead to prolonged usage, even when the physical benefits seem marginal at best.

Steroids can make you stronger and faster, but they can't improve your fighting technique.

Not Just About Being Bigger and Stronger

Steroids are not a magic pill that can turn an average fighter into a champion overnight. They might enhance physical attributes like strength and endurance, but technical skills in fighting play a more significant role in defining a champion.

A blackbelt isn’t something you wear, its something you become.

The Local Scene Versus The Top Tier

When considering local and amateur levels of MMA, the impact of steroids does not dramatically convert an average Joe into a fearsome warrior. The scene here is more about honing skills and gaining experience rather than relying on chemical enhancements.

However, at higher levels, where competitors are already maximizing their physical and technical potential, even a slight edge from PEDs can become significant. Still, this doesn't guarantee a championship or legendary status.

Health Risks and Why It's Not Worth It

The health implications of steroid use are well-documented. Liver damage, hormonal imbalances, and increased risk of heart disease are just the tip of the iceberg. Many athletes who have dabbled with steroids often face health issues later in life, making the fleeting moments of potential glory not worth the lifelong consequences.

A Call to the Young Fighters

To the young fighters, embracing your natural development process and focusing on perfecting your technique will offer more substantial long-term rewards than any steroid can provide. The risks far outweigh the rewards, and true skill development is achieved through hard work and dedication.

Concluding Thoughts

While steroids might offer some performance enhancement, they are not the key to becoming a world champion. The combination of natural talent, relentless training, and tactical acumen are what sets apart the top fighters. Let us not forget the importance of integrity and honor in sports.

I invite all of you to share your thoughts and experiences regarding this topic. Do you believe steroids genuinely provide a superhuman edge, or is it more of a psychological placebo? Join the conversation below.
